"Giving birth and being born brings us into the essence of creation, where the human spirit is courageous and bold and the body, a miracle of wisdom"- Harriette Hartigan
This Fresh 48 was a special one for me not only because it's my niece but also because it was so close to my youngest son's birthday (February 6th). Please note this session took place just a month before the Covid-19 pandemic. The space between birth and the time the baby's parents bring him or her home from the hospital is a magical time. The distractions of the outside world seem to fade away and you find yourself in a completely different realm.
For photographers, it’s also a place where beauty, art and new life intersect. A Fresh 48 session is typically shot within 12-48 hours after a baby’s birth. I remember when I had my first child. It was a whirlwind of emotions. I remember feeling like an alien in my own body, so many forms and so much information being thrown at me while running on almost no sleep. These were the days before social media so I did not have a photographer present like more couples tend to these days.
As a mom myself I know how scary and new things are in those first few days with the baby so when I came into this particular session with my sister-in-law and my niece not only was I there to capture special moments but to also be present in the moment of new life and the struggles new moms face. With the pandemic these types of sessions look a bit different however, that doesn't mean the first few days of the baby's life can't be documented. If a hospital session is not possible a lifestyle session is another option and typically a safer one being in the comfort of your own home.
For this session my goal was to capture all the sweet little moments. The first bath, the first footprint, the first nursing session and all the little moments in between. It was a pretty typical session and my goal is to just step back and really act more like a fly on the wall and intervene as little as possible to get some real, documentary style images. Of course we had to have some of the formal images in the baby's cute outfit and baby toes. That's a must of course!
One of my favorite things about newborn or Fresh 48 sessions is that sweet, delicious new baby smell. I will never tire of the essence of new life. It's simply amazing. AS far as preparation, I like to provide my clients with helpful tips. I break it down on what to expect before the session either over the phone or via Email. Mom is given a wardrobe guide which helps her feel informed and confident. I also go over any specific shots they may want. Some parents like to incorporate a blanket or stuffed animal from their own childhood perhaps. Some families like to do a little prayer or blessing over the new baby.
Whatever the day brings, you can be sure I'll be there to make the day even more memorable with long lasting images you will cherish for years to come.
